But she ranged far beyond the bel canto canon, including songs from around the world in her repertoire, as well as from contemporary composers like San Francisco’s Jake Heggie, for whom she’s served as a muse. Davies Symphony Hall also contains three separate rehearsal spaces in the Robert H. Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall. One of these spaces is the exact same size as the Opera House stage on the other side of the street to allow rehearsals for opera and ballet.

Witty, urbane and utterly unpretentious, von Stade introduces herself as Flicka while often noting the name came from her father’s favorite polo pony (though he – her father – died before she was born). Largely retired from concertizing since 2011, von Stade is committed to music education, organizing and underwriting choral groups in East Bay schools that lack robust music programs. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, inspired by her experience working with the Dallas Street Choir, she launched the People’s Choir of Oakland for unhoused or formerly unhoused singers.

“I thought this would be the perfect place for it,” she says of the water-jet-cut and baked-glass fixture made of interlocking C-shapes they’ve been prototyping for the last year. Part of what makes Stallings’ voice so rich is that she carries traces gleaned from some of jazz’s most consequential artists. At 84, she’s among the best jazz vocalists in the world, performing monthly at Keys Jazz Bistro in North Beach, singing in a venue formerly occupied by the storied El Matador, where Stallings performed six decades ago. The experience has to be uncanny, but Stallings is entirely in the moment, working out arrangements with her musicians on the bandstand, interpreting lyrics with sly understatement. The only precedent for a world-class jazz vocalist sounding this good as an octogenarian is the late Ernestine Anderson. The sisters were just getting started, though Bonnie decided to try her luck as a solo act in 1977.
At the same time, the nearby Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall, with a stage the same size as that of the Opera House, was opened as part of the complex which included the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. The artists who have performed on its stage are as legendary as the building itself. The theater hosts more than 60 performances of nine operas annually and for 85 years has been a vibrant enclave of arts, culture and creativity. Located at what is now Court and D streets, the opera house was built four years before Los Angeles had one of its own and was for many years perhaps the finest and most elaborate theater in Southern California. The opera house was built by mountain man-turned civic leader James W. Waters and his partner, Herman Brinkmeyer, as an investment in 1882. The beautiful red brick edifice with white facade topped by a golden eagle was known throughout the country for presenting top quality shows and concerts.

The result is that patrons can watch the stage between the two people in front of them.
